- Prepare an emergency kit containing food stuff, water, and first aid supplies. Food stuff in tins are mostly non-perishable and convenient. Make sure to have a couple of tin openers. Canned fruits, juices, vegetables, meats, dry cereals, nuts, un-salted crackers, and protein and energy bars are some good options. FEMA recommends keeping three days supply of food on hand.
- Water is critical. One gallon of water per person daily is recommended. Obtaining water that is packaged commercially is probably the safer and more convenient option to use in this situation. Storage containers and bottles can be sanitized with a mild solution of chlorine bleach and water, then filled with water for using.
- The basic disaster supply kit should have first-aid supplies, a radio that is battery powered, some flash lights, extra batteries, a whistle, dust masks, a small tool kit, and a solar charger.
- Residents must shut all windows and doors and stay away from those that are made of glass. Shattering of glass happens during a storm and can cut occupants. Don't tape the windows since there is some controversy regarding this practice. The National Hurricane Center advised against taping windows.
